چکیده

Other-generated hypotheses are often considered easier to test than self-generated hypotheses. To determine the precise effects of other-generated hypotheses, we propose three kinds of effects and describe a study designed to test for these effects of hypothesis source. The three kinds of effects considered are: (i) hypothesis plausibility changes, (ii) skepticism changes, and (iii) process changes. Forty-two undergraduate subjects were given a microworld discovery task called Milktruck. Subjects either had to generate their own initial hypothesis or were given the most frequently generated hypothesis. It was found that the othergenerated hypothesis lead to more thorough investigation of hypotheses, resulting in a decrease in false terminations with incorrect solutions. The results suggested these effects were caused by an increase in skepticism rather than changes in hypothesis plausibility or process changes.

The Effect of Iranian EFL Learners’ Self-generated vs. Group-generated Text-based Questions on their Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is one of the most important skills, especially in the EFL context. One way to improve reading comprehension is through strategy use. The present study aimed at investigating the effect of question-generation strategy on learners' reading comprehension. The participants in the study were 63 intermediate students from three intact groups in Resa institute in Boukan, They we...

Advances in Literature-Based Discovery

Since Swanson’s introduction of literature-based discovery in 1986, new hypotheses have been generated by connecting disconnected scientific literatures. In this paper, we present the general discovery model and show how it can be used for drug discovery research. We describe our discovery support tool by discussing a recent discovery for which we used this tool. We conclude by discussing criti...

Effects of Hypothesis Generation on Hypothesis Testing in Rule-Discovery Tasks.

The extent to which hypothesis generation affects hypothesis-testing performance was examined in a rule-discovery task. One hundred eight undergraduates enrolled in introductory psychology were randomly assigned to conditions in which the participants, experimenter, other participants, or no one generated hypotheses before the participants were tested on three different tasks. Hypothesis-testin...

A Thoroughly Validated Virtual Screening Strategy for Discovery of Novel HDAC3 Inhibitors

Histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) has been recently identified as a potential target for the treatment of cancer and other diseases, such as chronic inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes. Virtual screening (VS) is currently a routine technique for hit identification, but its success depends on rational development of VS strategies. To facilitate this process, we applied our previou...

Methodological function of hypotheses in science: old ideas in new cloth.

The August 1999 issue of Genome Research presented a very interesting editorial, “Hypothesis-Limited Research,” on the status and discovery function of scientific hypotheses in disciplines generating large amounts of data (Goodman 1999). Dr. Goodman points to two types of limitations generated by hypotheses—one theoretical and one pragmatic. She argues that generating at least some type of data...
